Anti-male Bias: From Blind Spots and Discrimination to False Accusations of Misconduct and Anti-male Aggression (Students/Non-CE)
This course will explore men’s experiences with gender bias and overlooked issues in men’s health. Anecdotally, many men report discrimination, emasculation, social isolation, lack of support, and even blatant public insults, which are sometimes “acceptable prejudices” where they work. False accusations of sexual misconduct can lead to loss of employment, relationships, and reputation, as well as damage to one’s mental health. Some therapists harbor conscious or unconscious biases against men that can harm treatments, such as: using negative stereotypes, framing them as oppressors, or attempting to “deconstruct” aspects of their gender identity.
