Overlooked Issues Related to Race and Mental Health
This 2-hour on demand, non-interactive distance learning course will explore overlooked issues related to race and mental health. As culture and discourse around racial issues has changed radically over the past decade, new challenges have emerged for psychotherapy patients. For example, as ideas of “colorblindness” have been upended, people are increasingly seeing themselves in racial terms; as a result, they may experience new emotional conflicts and dilemmas. As some people are increasingly told that they are victims or oppressors based on their race, it’s leading some people to feel attacked and demonized and others to become more anxious or even paranoid. These themes will be explored in detail, with a special focus on how these issues can shape mental illness and how therapists can improve care related to these experiences.
